My name is Marica Pienaar and I am a registered Counselling Psychologist, currently practicing in Klerksdorp in the North-West province.

I believe there are no two persons or situations that are the same. Therefore, I work predominantly from an integrative therapy approach. By drawing from a wide range of psychological theories, I engage with my clients in a flexible manner providing psychotherapeutic treatment based on the individual needs of each unique client.

I am inspired by the strength of the human psyche and it is a privilege for me to be able to enter and fully understand the entirety of an individual’s world that allows an effective focus on the most relevant aspects of his or her difficulty.

I provide brief and long-term therapy with therapeutic goals that include (but are not limited to):

  • Personal enrichment
  • Improved relationships
  • Increased clarity regarding life decisions
  • Reduced anxiety and depression
  • Overcoming self-defeating patterns

More about me

My journey with psychology started in 2005 at undergraduate level while I was in the process of completing my education degree (B.Ed) at the University of the Freestate (UFS).

Before pursuing my formal training as a psychologist, I was a teacher at various primary schools over a period of 9 years. Working with children encouraged me to broaden my understanding of human development and my passion for psychology drove me in my search for the opportunity to further my studies in this field.

I completed my Honours degree in psychology at the UFS on a part time basis while teaching, where after I started my formal training (M A in Counselling Psychology) at the North-West University (NWU) in Potchefstroom. I completed my internship at the Student Counselling services of the NWU. Here I formed part of a multi-disciplinary team, with the focus of the training being on crisis intervention, psychotherapy, and career counselling within the student population.

After I finished my internship, I worked full time as a lecturer at the Psychology department of the NWU. Being a part of undergraduate student’s learning and growth in the field of psychology was such a privilege and I enjoyed opportunities to be involved with research and acting as research co-supervisor for students in the Masters programme.

After a year of lecturing, I entered into full time private practice, a journey which has brought much personal and professional growth. Along with providing psychological services to individuals and couples, I am also involved with adolescent group therapy and a newly found business in adventure therapy.
